English version:
€300 and €48.82 charged/withheld without evidence following a vehicle malfunction
In May 2026, while travelling in Italy as an international tourist from China, I rented a vehicle from Sicily by Car (Rental Contract No. 588028732 / Rental Agreement No. 160068897) and purchased the full protection available for the rental.
Throughout the rental, I used the vehicle carefully and always refuelled it correctly with the required fuel.
On 4 May, during a normal reversing manoeuvre, the vehicle suddenly developed a serious malfunction: after reverse gear was engaged, the vehicle moved forward instead, and the engine warning light appeared. I immediately stopped the vehicle and contacted Sicily by Car. No collision occurred.
The breakdown had already disrupted part of my trip. However, after returning home, the situation became even more frustrating.
Sicily by Car withheld/charged €300 in connection with alleged vehicle damage and subsequently charged another €48.82 for fuel.
Since May, I have repeatedly asked one very simple question:
What exactly happened to the vehicle, and what evidence shows that I caused it?
If Sicily by Car believes that the malfunction resulted from something I did, such as incorrect refuelling or improper use of the vehicle, it should provide the evidence.
Almost five months have now passed. Despite numerous emails, I still have not received a complete technical report, diagnosis, or other documentation demonstrating that the malfunction was caused by me.
Regarding the additional €48.82 fuel charge, I have also requested the actual fuel-level records and calculation supporting this amount. This has not been satisfactorily documented either.
This is no longer simply about €348.82.
As an international tourist, I chose Sicily by Car expecting a reliable vehicle and reasonable customer support. The malfunction had already affected my trip, and after returning home I have spent almost five months sending emails simply trying to obtain an explanation and supporting evidence.
This has been an extremely disappointing and frustrating experience.
My request is simple:
If Sicily by Car believes that I caused the vehicle malfunction, please provide the evidence.
If it cannot do so, I request the release/refund of the €300 and reimbursement of the insufficiently documented €48.82 fuel charge.
Almost five months should be more than enough time to establish why a vehicle malfunctioned. A consumer should not have to continue bearing the financial and personal cost of an investigation that the company has been unable to conclude.
